Four planes. Three survivors. One message. It seemed like the end of the world… but it wasn’t. This, however, just might be…
For all of you that read Sarah Lotz’s stunning thriller, The Three, you will have been eagerly anticipating the so called follow-up, Day Four. I was in the same boat (no pun intended) and I wasn’t disappointed. I picked up the chunky hardback version of Day Four on a Friday evening and I had it finished and was rereading sections by Sunday afternoon. What a whirlwind of events and unforgettable characters ranging from all walks of life and from all over the world.
As a storyteller, this is one thing that Lotz is able to do flawlessly, she captures the culture and authenticity of her characters through their own unique voices and there is so many of them she really does show a breathtaking knowledge of the world. She is obviously an incredibly well travelled woman and must have spent a lot of time conversing with people from across the globe.
Day Four is another eerie disaster scenario that draws upon everyday events and turns them into something exceptionally terrifying. What begins as a short new year’s cruise aboard the huge liner, the Beautiful Dreamer turns into the stuff of nightmares when out of the blue the ship loses power, comes to a halt and seems to have lost all contact with the outside world whilst drifting off the Gulf of Mexico. At first the passengers and crew are relatively calm and enjoy the free bar and seem content making the odd complaint… but things quickly spiral out of control with the realisation that the internet and all communication is down and also there is an outbreak of the norovirus on board. To add to the drama the drainage system packs up and the toilets are out of use. People begin to panic and when food supplies run low, things really start to kick off. In the midst of all the drama we read the points of view of several different passengers and crew on board which builds up a horrific picture of humanity in a crisis. Throw in an oddball psychic and a murderer and there really is a party whilst the ship is lost, drifting out towards the Bermuda Triangle and potentially heading towards a storm…
I don’t want to give too much away because there are so many plot twists and fantastic scenarios and portrayals of human nature in this book you really do have to read it yourself to get a sense of the epicness Lotz has pulled out the bag yet again.
If you’re looking for a fast paced, unputdownable thriller and don’t mind putting yourself off cruising for life then check Day Four by Sarah Lotz! You certainly won’t be disappointed…
